Abstract

Smart cities are considered one of the recent developments in the fields of architecture and urban planning, as they integrate smart technologies with the conservation of natural resources and energy, among other aspects. More importantly, they aim to provide a sustainable environment for the community. However, there is a clear neglect or failure when it comes to sustainable urban design for the external urban spaces within this smart and sustainable system. The movement of people in outdoor urban spaces is an important issue that should be considered in the process of urban design and planning. These spaces in smart cities are characterized by unique and innovative experiences of visitor movement.
Designers and urban planners have found that combining the concepts of smart technology and urban sustainability requires a clear plan using a comprehensive smart and sustainable urban design concept. This has a significant impact on overcoming various environmental dilemmas such as pollution in its various forms and mitigating the effects of natural phenomena like climate change. It also contributes to achieving clean economic development with lower costs and higher productivity. Additionally, it promotes community participation, which enhances the idea of a comprehensive design concept for everyone and ensures that residents have good educational and health conditions in these cities.
Therefore, the research paper aims to explore the dimensions of smart cities, study the planning and design of external urban spaces in these cities, and examine the social, economic, and technological aspects. The goal is to establish a set of general principles and objectives for sustainable urban design of external urban spaces in smart cities within the framework of current and future cultures, requirements, and new technologies of contemporary urbanism, all while emphasizing community participation.
